How to Prepare Your Hair for Sampling

For accurate results, your hair sample needs to be virgin (natural) hair — free of color, relaxer, and certain products. Please follow these steps before collecting your sample:

1. Use natural, untreated hair.
Your sample must come from virgin hair. If your hair is colored or relaxed, you'll need about ½ inch to 1 inch of new growth. Section off one area at the back of your head that you'll leave undyed and un-relaxed, and use that spot for your sample.

2. Avoid certain products 24–48 hours before sampling.
Do not use henna, or any products containing zinc oxide or selenium (such as some anti-dandruff shampoos) for 24–48 hours before collecting your sample.

3. Wash with a clarifying shampoo.
Cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup and residue.

4. Dry your hair completely.
Let your hair air dry for 4–16 hours, or use a blow dryer without the comb attachment, blowing directly onto the hair until fully dry.

Once your hair is prepped and dry, you're ready to collect your sample and send it in.
